Carole King was recording “Tapestry” this week in 1971. Joni Mitchell was doing “Blue” in the room next door...

...according the Tumblr of David Hepworth's forthcoming book http://1971neveradullmoment.tumblr.com/

Here's a photo from the day Mitchell and James Taylor did the backing vocals for “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” at A&M Studios in Hollywood:

Cary Raditz, who was the subject of the Joni Mitchell song Carey

Here's a photo of Cary and Joni together, taken from Cary's Facebook:

And here he is (at least I think this is also him) with the sign for the Mermaid Cafe (Restaurant) on Matala beach from GirlsLikeUsTheMusic.com:

For anyone wondering what's happened to Cary since meeting Joni in Matala, you can find out from his LinkedIn profile. I learnt about this from the latest comment on the "Matala and Joni Mitchell" blog post which continues to amaze and delight.

this piece about Matala and the incredible comments underneath are what prompted me to start this blog

In the comments we discover what became of two characters from the song Carey.

Stelios, who ran the Mermaid Cafe, is now living in California, running health food shops and selling water pumps to Africa.

Carey himself is "married with kids and working for an NGO doing financial consulting in third world countries or something like that" (update: he's on LinkedIn).

Here's the performance of Carey which Joni prefaces by telling their stories at length:

She tells another version of the same story at Carnegie Hall.

I went to Matala this year.

These are the caves:

And this the view of the town from the caves, undoubtedly more developed than in 1970:
